Kendell Geers Where Angels Fear to Tread

Size
cm 564 x 564
Description
Kendell Geers’ work, which is influenced by the political and social tensions that affect his country, is pervaded by a highly critical stance and points an accusing finger at the political and social system of South Africa. His research exploits recognizable representations and images capable of capturing one’s attention, and manipulates them to open them up to subjective interpretations. The five-pointed star, which is used in different contexts from politics to alchemy, symbolizes protection. In the esoteric world, the point turned downwards indicates evil, as in the case of The Devil You Know, on display in The Street (December 7, 2018-April 28, 2019). The star made out of the police cars’ flashing lights recalls the role of law enforcement. The work is the fruit of the artist’s personal experience, and allows us to glimpse the corruption of a part of the South African police and its poor reputation.
