Igor Eskinja You are here

Description
The work of Igor Eškinja, who completed his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in 2002, is characterized by his interest in the mechanisms of representation, and the viewer’s relationship with the artwork. The attention he gives to the viewing conditions of his works makes each of his exhibitions an experience through which to reflect upon the notions of observation, visual sensation, and space. Combining painting, sculpture, and photography, he produces works that defy classification, for the most part constructed using “light” materials such as adhesive tape and dust, which are then photographed. In this way the artist takes the viewer to the boundary between reality and appearance, involving them in perceptual situations designed to question the sense of space and of self. In keeping with the line of inquiry pursued by the Croatian artist, "You are here" confirms Eškinja’s principal interest: to work on the observer’s mental relations, on the deception of representation, and on emptiness as the active space of perception. The image comprising the work has an ambiguous identity: it is the reproduction of a work which, once created, was photographed and then destroyed, and at the same time the staging of a space at once real and unreal. "You are here" prompts reflection on the ambiguity of images and on the role of the viewing public in the “construction” of the work, partially created by their own perception of it.
