Elio Waschimps (Naples, 1932) appeared on the Neapolitan scene in the mid-1950s with a solo exhibition at the Medea Gallery. During his sixty-year career, the artist has embraced the tendencies of abstractionism, not merely in the purely informal sense, but in the more fertile sense of abstract-expressionism, in order to arrive today at a new naturalism. Ritratto o quel che resta (Portrait or what remains) is a representative work of the artist's most recent production. Its dominant elements are the childlike use of the pictorial sign, the gestural use of the brushstroke and the investigation into the physical and existential fragility of the human figure, conducted, through a conscious distortion of the genre of portrait and self-portrait.
