Gabriele Basilico Roma

Description
One of the major contemporary photographers, Gabriele Basilico participated in the aesthetic and conceptual renewal of photography over the last thirty years. Having studied architecture, he undertook an enterprise of documentation that developed a reflection on the representation of the urban landscape, linking it to the traditions of photography, not only Italian, with evident influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher and of Walker Evans. From the end of the 1970s, Basilico created one of the major photographic archives in Europe of architecture and urban landscape. His works allow for a lucid view of contemporary metropolises and an analysis of the architectural traces left by social and political mutations of the continent through a representation that almost always avoids the human presence. The fifteen works by Gabriele Basilico in the MAXXI collection illustrate the entire arc of his activity as a photographer, from the earliest experiences in Milan to the more recent urban explorations in Rome and Palermo. In Rome, Basilico described the presence of ancient ruins in the urban fabric of the late 19th century city. The Arch of Constantine is seen from the Circo Flavio, through one of the large windows that frames the image of the monument. Shortened by the perspective and laterally illuminated, the arch reveals the elegance of its structure in a timeless setting that recalls the ancient representations of the monuments in the Forum.
