Gerardo di Fiore (Giugliano, 1934) is Emeritus Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he taught Sculpture. He became popular in the 1970s as a militant artist, strongly committed to social issues, associating himself with the activities of the Galleria Inesistente (Nonexistent Gallery) founded by Vincent d’Arista and Bruno Barbati, and carrying out numerous interventions in the Campania region. So ham is part of a cycle of works set up on the occasion of the artist's solo exhibition conceived as a tribute to Giordano Bruno, at the Centro Arte Incontri in Nola in 1975, in concomitance with a symposium dedicated to the philosopher. The work, referring to Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Creazione di Adamo, represents the unification between creation and introspection: from the consciousness of the self, through the mantra of the breath (so ham) to the universal self.
