Sarkis Two Rainbows

Size
cm 600 x 900
Description
The installation is characterized by the emblem of the rainbow and the famous image of the colored stairs of Istanbul, symbolizing the people’s resistance. «My rainbow – Sarkis explains – was born at the same time as the facts of Gezi, Istanbul, and it is a sort of metaphor for the Big Bang: something new happened, the rainbows went crazy. Perhaps the rainbows are causing beauty to be born. Two weeks after the first rainbow, an elderly man painted the stairs below his house: he wanted to transform the grayness and sadness into something colorful. The story did not end there. The City of Istanbul had the stairs repainted gray. At that point, all throughout the city young people began painting other stairs with the colors of the rainbow. My project for MAXXI is the encounter between these two rainbows».
