Anna Maria Gioja senza titolo

Size
70 x 200 cm. N.2 elementi di misure 70 x 100 cm.
Description
Senza titolo (Untitled) was exhibited on the occasion of the project Per_formare una collezione (Per_forming a collection): The Show Must Go_ON, curated by Andrea Viliani at Madre in 2017. In this painting, the silhouette of the Italsider factory in Bagnoli and the movement of the clouds recall the chasm opened in the urban landscape by the social emergency. To the turmoil and rebellion of nature corresponds the inner turmoil of the artist depicted on the pictorial surface: a reaction exhibited through the use of a red stain, which evokes a pain that it ought to be shared. That is a collective wound and intimate malaise at the same time, a mute and implacable form of denunciation and resistance.

Bibliography
Anna Maria Gioja (Naples, 1957), after graduating from the Liceo Artistico in Naples, moved in 1975 to Basel, where she lived until 1986. In 1976 she attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. In 1981 she participated in the first group exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel (Weihnachtaustellung), curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann, with a large painting. In 1982 she won the Kunststipendium of the city of Basel, a scholarship for young emerging artists. The neo-expressionist paintings of the '80s, made on large formats and with graphic inserts, represent the feelings of unease, in a way similar to the research of young artists of Central Europe. From the mid-90s until 2009 she mainly created installations, photographic and video works, participating in audiovisual festivals.
